We will be spacing out appointment times and we ask that you keep to the allocated time slot to attend your appointment. If you feel unwell, develop fever, shortness of breath, please do not attend IRIS Surgery. Instead, let us know to defer your appointment.

Please allocate at least 2 hours for your appointment.
You will first be assessed by our orthoptist, further investigations and scans may be required, followed by dilation of your pupils which can make your vision blurry, this will take at least 4 hours to reverse. Please do not drive when your pupils are dilated. You will then by assessed by A/Prof Chong for a comprehensive examination when all the appropriate scans/tests are completed. If additional minor procedures are required after examination, such as lasers or injections, additional time will need to be allocated.

Ophthalmologist

A medical doctor who has undertaken additional specialist training in the diagnosis, management and surgical treatment of disorders of the eye and visual system.

Ophthalmologists trained in Australia receive their fellowship from RANZCO, which is the accredited specialist medical college for Australia & New Zealand.
An ophthalmologist in Australia and New Zealand is required to have undertaken a minimum of 12-14 years of medical & ophthalmic training, comprising of:
  • six to seven years at a medical school, graduating with a degree in medicine,
  • at least two years of postgraduate clinical experience, and
  • at least five years of ophthalmic specialist training (vocational training program) and
  • successful completion of examinations set by RANZCO. This includes up to
  • 12,000 hours of training including micro-surgical skills program, and a specified number of required procedures and sub-specialty surgical procedures.

Other eye care professionals that ophthalmologists work with include:

Orthoptists
Ophthalmologists generally work alongside Orthoptists in clinic. Orthoptists perform the initial vision assessment and conduct appropriate tests before the patient sees the ophthalmologist for a detailed examination, opinion and treatment.

Optometrist
Previously known as opticians, optometrists are trained to examine the eyes to detect defects in vision, signs of injury, ocular diseases or abnormality, and problems with general health, such as high blood pressure or diabetes. They make an eye health assessment, prescribe spectacles or contact lenses and refer patients to an ophthalmologist for further treatment, when necessary. Optometrists usually work alongside spectacle and contact lens dispensers.
